First up, relax - the trades are one of the strongest industries in Australia during economic shocks.
The conflict in the Middle East is starting to ripple through the global economy and trade businesses could feel it through fuel, freight and supplier prices.
Around 20% of the world’s oil moves through the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow shipping lane near Iran. Right now it’s all blocked up with no ships able to move through.
If oil prices rise, the first place tradies notice it is fuel prices. But the second impact is product & material prices.
Australia imports a lot of construction related products & materials - so higher shipping costs and higher fuel prcies will slowly push business costs up. Even locally produced materials will get more expensive because diesel powers construction logistics. Here’s the breakdown:

The key thing to remember is that Australia still has strong housing demand and a major housing shortage, which continues to support long-term work across the trades.
For now, it’s simply something worth keeping an eye on because global energy shocks usually show up on the job site through fuel and supplier prices first.
