ATO Credit Card Payment Ban: Tax Office Admits It Got Small Business Cash Flow Wrong

The ATO commissioner has acknowledged he misunderstood why small businesses use credit cards to pay their tax, as the tax office faces criticism over plans to remove the payment option.

His assumption was that businesses using credit cards to manage cash flow were struggling to pay. What he’s since heard is that some are simply using the interest-free period to manage when money comes in and goes out.

The planned ban, originally due to start on 1 December, has been pushed back to 1 July 2027.

🔧 Pay BAS With Credit Card? Cash Flow Doesn’t Always Mean Struggling

Speaking at Senate estimates, the commissioner said his initial concern was that businesses could face hefty interest charges if money they were expecting failed to arrive. But he acknowledged that this didn’t account for businesses using the interest-free period as part of their normal cash flow management.

For those operators, the issue is the loss of a payment option they deliberately use to manage their bills. The commissioner estimated about 250,000 small businesses use credit cards for tax payments.

💬 Small Business Should Have Been Asked Earlier

The commissioner admitted that involving the right stakeholders, including the small business ombudsman, could have led to a different outcome.

Earlier consultation, he said, could have helped the ATO understand how businesses use credit cards and identify alternatives to withdrawing the option altogether. Instead, the tax office learned more about those practical uses after the decision had drawn criticism.

💰 The ATO Says Processing Costs Are the Problem

The ATO estimates that continuing to accept credit card payments would cost taxpayers $200 million a year. According to the commissioner, processing costs remained too difficult to afford despite negotiations. The Assistant Treasurer described the situation as complicated, saying the ATO had been trying to negotiate a better deal with credit card companies.

📅 Can You Pay ATO With Credit Card? Ban Delayed Until July 2027

The Assistant Treasurer said the longer transition period would give small businesses more time to adjust, with the government and ATO continuing to work with the business community. The ATO has also been asked to consider arrangements beyond 30 June next year, although no details of those arrangements were provided.

For tradies and businesses who use a credit card to manage tax payments, the distinction matters: the change has been delayed, but the supplied report does not confirm that the payment option will remain available after 1 July 2027.
